Gary William Stevenson
1948 - 2019

With family by his side, Gary William Stevenson, 71, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2019 in Winnipeg.

Gary was born March 4, 1948, in Winnipeg, Manitoba to George and Dolly (McCracken) Stevenson. He grew up on Redwood Avenue and attended school at Andrew Mynarski and later at Sisler. As a boy, he spent his summers at Grand Beach, Manitoba. Later in life, he would return here year after year making memories with his family. In his younger years, he held several jobs, including working with Pepsi Canada and as a delivery driver “milk man” with Co-Op Dairy. In 1972, he followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Gordon, and applied for a job at Greyhound Canada. He served the company dutifully in several roles, driving over a million miles in the process. Over the years, he ran several charters for travel hockey teams competing across Canada in the United States. In 1988, he travelled to Calgary and participated in the Olympic festivities, transporting athletes to and from their events. At the end of the Olympics, his wife and his two youngest boys had the opportunity to join him and take part in the closing ceremonies. He took pride in his work and was awarded a 30-year award in 2008. He retired in 2009.

In his retirement, his love for classic cars was rejuvenated. He enjoyed talking about some of the cars he owned; his 1949 Ford, his 1958 Chevy, and his 1963 Pontiac Convertible. In the spring and summer months, he liked to be outside and watch the storms come in. He enjoyed his many sing-along gatherings with his family and friends. He frequented his cabin at Winnipeg Beach, and especially enjoyed his time out there when a big storm roared in off the lake, pattering rain on the roof of the cabin and watching the spectacular lightning shows.

He enjoyed several family trips, including going to Mexico with his boys, to Vancouver and other parts of Canada to visit his extensive network of cousins, cruisin’ through the South Dakota Badlands. He also loved his casino trips to Shooting Star and many excursions to Las Vegas, including one for his brother’s wedding. In recent years, he enjoyed visiting his grandchildren in Florida. While in Florida, he delighted in the opportunity to take a family trip to Disney World with several of his grandchildren, sit outside and enjoy the sunshine, drive on the beach beside the Atlantic Ocean, and an opportunity to tour Bike Week at Daytona Beach. He loved animals and had a particular affection for birds and dogs. He cared deeply for his little pals, Rascal and Dexter (his dogs), who in the last few years would run errands and drive around town with Gary in his truck.

Gary will be greatly missed by his wife Michelle; his brother Gordon Stevenson (Marge); his sons, Scott, Ron (Chrystal), Jason (Natalie), Regan (Kristen); his nine grandchildren whom he was very proud of, Montana, Bryson, Justin, Jaylie, Brooke, Taylor, Kaia, Ryker, Blakely; and a host of family and friends whose lives he has touched over the years. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Dolly and step-mother Helen.

A memorial service will be held at Bardal Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at 1:00 p.m.
